History

The Faculty of Education of the Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar is a public institution owned by the state. The Faculty is the legal successor of the Pedagogical Academy of the Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar.

The Pedagogical Academy is the oldest member of the Dzemal Bijedic University. It was founded on November 6, 1950 as the Higher Pedagogical School, and its establishment began the process of higher education in Mostar. It was the second higher education school of this type, besides the one in Sarajevo. The Higher Pedagogical School had several study groups: mathematics and physics, Serbo-Croatian language and literature, history and geography, biology and chemistry, and Serbo-Croatian language and history. In the 1970/1971 school year, the Higher Pedagogical School was transformed into the Pedagogical Academy in Mostar. In 1975, the Pedagogical Academy, together with the existing higher education institutions, was given the use of the adapted space of the so-called Western Camp, which improved working conditions, and cabinets for physics, chemistry, botany, and zoology were formed. It remained in these spaces until the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993. In the academic year 1994/1995, the Pedagogical Academy in Mostar enrolled students in all 6 groups, and part of the teaching took place in the area of Jablanica and Konjic due to the war. In 2002/2003, the Pedagogical Academy was transformed into the Faculty of Teacher Education.
